TARIFF STRUCTURE

Protea Metering strictly adheres to the tariffs set by the local municipal authority, overseen and regulated by the National Energy Regulator (NERSA). These tariffs are subject to annual increases, sanctioned by the municipality and approved by NERSA.

ESKOM increases their tariffs on the 1st of April each year, while the rest of the local municipalities adjust their tariffs on the 1st of July annually.

WHAT FIXED CHARGES COULD YOU EXPECT ON YOUR MONTHLY ACCOUNT, AS PER THE COUNCIL TARIFFS?

WHAT IS A CAPACITY CHARGE?

A capacity charge (or 'fixed charge') is applied to business premises regardless of electricity consumption, based on the main circuit breaker's rating for electricity supply.

feature icon

WHO DETERMINES THE CAPACITY CHARGES?

The Council sets fixed charges within their approved electricity tariffs periodically; electricity re-sellers do not influence these tariffs.

feature icon

HOW DO CAPACITY CHARGES INFLUENCE ACCOUNTS?

The unit tariff (kWh) for business accounts includes a lower capacity charge compared to domestic accounts. For the latest approved business tariffs, consumers can contact our offices. The savings from the lower tariff often offset the capacity charge and more.

feature icon

HOW CAN CAPACITY CHARGES BE REDUCED?

Consumers can save on the capacity charge by downgrading their supply if their circuit breaker rating exceeds their needs. This requires a qualified electrician and landlord permission. Notify Impact Meter Services for inspection and adjustment of the capacity charge.

feature icon

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE CITY COUNCIL WAS READING THE METERS?

City Council's electricity charges, mandated by law, are mirrored in Impact Meter Services' invoices, aligning with Council-approved tariffs.

CAN A CONSUMER REFUSE TO PAY THE CAPACITY CHARGE AND ONLY PAY FOR ACTUAL CONSUMPTION?

The capacity charge, integral to business account tariffs, ensures lower unit tariffs. Failure to pay the total due may result in electricity disconnection and legal collection actions.
